Baudot - Ticker code used in the U.S.
cd/m2 (candelas per meters squared) - unit of measure for the brightness of light emitted from the surface of one square meter as it appears to the human eye. For example, the brightness of the average TV is approximately 150 cd/m2; a Hi-Brite LED indoor display is approximately 1000 cd/m2; and a full color outdoor RainbowWall LED display is approximately 5000 cd/m2.
Character - A single letter, number or symbol. Standard single-stroke ASCII characters are formed within a 5 X 7 dot pattern.
Column - A single vertical row of LED dots (pixels) or blocks.
Conformal coating - coating applied to electronic components that resists corrosion and protects against harsh weather conditions to extend the life of an outdoor display.

Data Vendor - Distributors of raw industry information that charge a fee for the data.
Discrete LED Jet (a.k.a. Strip Jet) - LED Jets constructed from horizontally arranged strips of 24 LEDs.
Dot - Shorthand for an LED pixel.
Dynamic Tricolor LED display - see Tricolor LED Displays.

Fascia - Protective material that covers the surface of the display. Typically Lexan or wire mesh.
Firmware - A program stored on an internal chip inside the display that defines the specific functionality of the sign. It controls and formats data and operates the display hardware.
Full Color LED displays - A display that is fully populated with LEDs capable of presenting millions of colors per pixel. Recommended technology for video content. Colors may be set by software.
Full Matrix - A display that is fully populated with LEDs that allows the entire face of the display to be used to present text in variable fonts, sizes and foreign character sets, simple charts, graphics and video.

Hi-Brite LED - The brand name for Trans-Lux’ indoor LED with a brightness of 6 to 8 times that of Trans-Lux’ standard LED for use in situations with high ambient light.

Inter-line spacing - Fixed spacing between rows of LEDs that allows lines to be clearly distinguished from each other when viewing from a distance.
Inter-character spacing - Fixed spacing between LED columns that allows for greater viewing distances, clearer characters and better character definition.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) - A high-resolution flat screen display technology that contains a liquid crystal solution between two sheets of polarizing material. Electric current passes through the liquid causing the crystals to align with the field, forming a crystalline arrangement that forms an image as light passes through. Recommended technology for video and close up text viewing.
LED (Light Emitting Diode) - LEDs are essentially solid-state semiconductors that contain a chemical compound that gives off light when an electric current passes through it. They operate without the glass and filament of incandescents and are noted for their lighting efficiency and long life.
LED Jet - Brand name of the original LED electronic ticker manufactured by Trans-Lux that streams financial data, logos and custom messages.

Managed Module - An LED block with an 8 x 24 dot matrix used as a component for many Trans-Lux displays.
Monochrome LED Display - A display that is populated entirely in single color LEDs (e.g.: amber), which is less expensive than multicolor LED displays of the same type.

Nit(s) - Shorthand notation for cd/m2 (1 cd/m2 = 1 Nit). See cd/m2, above.

Pixel - Shorthand term for “picture element” used to describe a single LED or a cluster of LEDs that forms a unit.
Pixel (Dot) Pitch - The distance between the centers of adjacent LED pixels.

RG LED Displays (Red/Green) - A display that is populated with LEDs capable of two colors per pixel (red or green). Color in use is set by software.
Row - A single contiguous horizontal line of LED dots (pixels) or blocks.

Super Hi-Brite LED - The brand name for Trans-Lux’ indoor LED with a brightness of 20 times that of Trans-Lux’ standard LED used in environments with direct sunlight.

Tile - A block of LEDs, typically arranged in a rectangle, which is used as a component of a larger display. Tile size varies by display type.
Tileable - Refers to a display model that can be built to a custom size by arranging LED tiles vertically and horizontally.
Tricolor LED displays - A display that is populated with LEDs capable of three colors per pixel (red, green and amber light). Color in use is set by software.
Third-party software - Customizable PC software, developed by a software vendor that interprets, filters and formats data.
Ticker Data - A stream of alpha and numeric data showing financial trading information. Traditionally, alpha characters (stock symbol) appear on the top line and numerals (prices) appear on the bottom line of the display.

Viewing Distance - the furthest point from the display that the LED characters maintain clarity and legibility.

Zoning - A feature of the ProLine controller in which a sign is divided into smaller, virtual signs to display multiple messages at one time. Zones can also be overlapped to create a picture-in-picture. Available in ProLine 900.
